Transforming Data into Action: Luisa Costa's Impact Journey
Luisa Costa, an MSc student in Evidence-based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation at Oxford University, arrived at the Community Impact Lab 2023-2024 with a track record of transforming education for millions. As a former Director of Educational Assessment in Brazil, she evaluated policies affecting 2 million students. Now, Luisa brought this wealth of experience in data-driven public policy to a new challenge. With over six years of experience in data science and policy evaluation, she saw the Lab as an opportunity to apply her expertise in a new context. Her project with the Oxfordshire Inclusive Economy Partnership (OIEP) on Community Hubs showcased the power of evidence-based interventions in addressing local challenges with global resonance.
The Lab's masterclass series provided Luisa with fresh perspectives on sustainable development. "It was very enriching, and I enjoyed learning about the SDGs with experts. It was also a moment of connection with the scholars," she reflects. This interdisciplinary exposure enhanced her approach to the field project, where she gained crucial insights into translating research for policymakers.
"Policy leaders want key messages and guidance on how to improve their work. The research is important, but we need to translate it to their reality and needs," Luisa observes. The experience deepened Luisa's appreciation for the SDGs' versatility. "It taught me that the SDGs can be present in all the work we do, if we are open to including them in our projects. It is a matter of looking at it and incorporating them in our actions," she notes. This realisation underscores the potential of the SDGs to bridge academic knowledge with practical application.
Putting this insight into practice, Luisa focused on "communicating results in an effective and attractive way" when she presented to the Oxfordshire County Council Inclusive Development Working Group. She reflects, "It was an achievement being able to talk with policy makers and other organisations about my work and research."
Describing her Lab journey as one of "growth, impact, for real-life problems," Luisa affirmed she is now "more confident working with complex challenges in an international environment." Her journey demonstrates how research can inform policy, creating a ripple effect of positive impact across communities.
