Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism
‘Tourism as an economic powerhouse is the third highest world category in export earnings in 2015, representing 10% of world GDP, 30% of services exports and 1 out of every 10 jobs in the world. Tourism has the potential to contribute, directly or indirectly to all of the goals’ UNWTO
In December 2022, a delegation from the Lab were invited to Madrid to participate in the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) workshop on Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism as the UNWTO lead on the development of a standards-based framework with the purpose of facilitating better comparisons on sustainable tourism data and monitoring progress on the global goals.
This trip marked the beginning of a new element of the Lab’s easyJet holidays Sustainable Tourism Programme. As part of this project, focusing on strategic impact, some of our 2023 Lab Fellows will work closely with the UNWTO to develop a practical and much-needed Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework which will help private companies to measure their sustainability efforts and drive the tourism sector towards a more sustainable future.
Case studies from across the globe were shared and we look forward to working further with Clara van der Pol, the team at UNWTO and the expert group on Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism over 2023.
